Oh Sweet Nectar

OK last post about broccoli I SWEAR.  But OMG..

The recipe said it's "The Best Broccoli of Your Life" but c'mon, it's the internet.  Everything is the "Best _____ of Your Life."

This IS the Best Broccoli of Your Life.

I'm not sure how to explain the flavor, but just imagine heaven.  That should do it.
It's crunchy and lemony and sharp (cheese), and salty.  Perfection.

Funny story though.  I almost tossed it in the trash.  Because this is what it looked like:

LOL.  Yea- I don't think it's supposed to look like that.  But what ha' happen wuz.. I don't have any aluminum foil at the moment, but the recipe calls for the broccoli to be tossed in like 5 tbsp of olive oil so I didn't feel like I ran the risk of it sticking to the pan.  And I roasted it for 20 mins- even less than the recipe!  I'm blaming the pan.  Anyway, I smelled of a piece, as I poised the pan over the garbage.  Then I nibbled it... then OMG.  So I kept it and ate it all in like 30 seconds.  The End.

P.S.  If you don't make this

..........

Y U NO MAKE BROCCOLI YET?!

B-R-O-C-C-O-L-I

I'm making lots of it!
Steamed broccoli.  Roasted Broccoli.  Broccoli with cheese.  BROCCOLI!!!!

Anyway, I'm whipping up a few things to have for the rest of the week.  Spaghetti Squash and Meatballs is in the crockpot at the moment and smells AMAZING.  I didn't know they made organic pasta sauce, but they do!

I'm also making these Broccoli Bites- they just came out of the oven and are delicious.  Almost chicken nugget-esque.  USE FRESH ORGANIC BROCCOLI, by the way.  Just, please.  And instead of using the italian breadcrumbs the recipe suggested (non-paleo), I used 1/2 cup of almond flour to give it a little more texture.  Not entirely sure how much that did though because the 3 eggs gave it more egg/less bread texture.  Does not change the five stars my tastebuds just gave this recipe.  I made them in muffin liners because (without the breadcrumbs) they were too runny.  I almost ate the muffin liner; they're that good.  I also like that they're more neutral ground- I could totally have these for breakfast!

Day 2

Well, it's day 2 and I woke up feeling pretty good!  It usually takes me quite a while to actually get out of bed in the mornings and even though I went to bed around the same time as usual, it was easier for me get going today.
I forgot to mention that I had a headache for a few hours yesterday, as the withdrawals hit me fast.  Since I ate dinner last night though, I've felt fine.  Speaking of dinner, I had the same thing as I had for lunch minus the kielbasa.  Chicken, broccoli, and a tiny potato this time.  I intended to cook something from the groceries I bought, but by the time I got home I was so hungry that I just stuck my leftovers in the microwave.  Oh well.  I did get to make up 2 salads for lunches though.  This is mine for today : )

Homemade "ranch" dressing (greek yogurt)
Organic red peppers
onion
cheddar cheese (organic?)
roasted chicken
50/50 spinach and spring greens

For breakfast: Organic banana.  Which made me think... How is it that animals (non-captive) eat better than we do? And for free!  It's crazy to think that there are monkeys out there right now eating Organic bananas!  But then if you trail that thought... The only thing "organic" about a banana is that we choose to call it that.  Organic bananas are actually just bananas.  It's the "bananas" WE eat that aren't natural.  I guess they're still bananas, but not the way nature intended them to be with the pesticides and hormones.  Humans should eat real food.  Is the food you eat as real as the food the animals eat?

Day 1 (Still)

Ok I can't even make it through this recipe research without wanting to flip over my little TV tray and beeline to Taco Bell.  Maybe it's the fact that I have a resolve to not ever eat the sugary, bready things I've been so addicted to, or maybe it's the fact that my body is so dependent on carbs and sugars that I'm going through withdrawals a mere 24 hours later.  IT SUCKS.  I've been sitting here snacking on pistachios to slate my hunger and, sorry guys, you're just not cutting it.  I need real food.

Trying to make a grocery list when all I have in my pantry is peanut butter, rice, pasta noodles, oatmeal, tortilla chips, and confectioner's sugar IS REALLY HARD.  I'm going to have to buy literally everything, down to the cooking oil.  I know that once I have the basics, they'll last for quite a while, so I just need to remember that.  And remind my wallet, who's been soaking my purse with it's tears for the past hour.  Throwing out all that food will be difficult, but necessary.  The Bread-Sugar-Brainwash must be stopped!  TO THE BATMOBILE!

Day 1

Well, I just polished off my first ever intentionally Paleo meal.  It was tasty.  Thanks to my cousin-to-be, I am now obsessed with organic broccoli.  Not broccoli.  Life-changing, perspective-altering, brain-exploding organic broccoli.  I feel like I have the potential to be the healthiest person on earth now.  I assume there are a million other vegetables with delicious organic versions, which I will be trying.  Anyway, here's my lunch.

Beef kielbasa (non-grassfed)
Slice of roasted chicken (probably not free-range)
ORGANIC BROCCOLI
Organic russet potato

Ok so maybe this meal wasn't strictly paleo, but gimme a break.  I'm poor and this is my first try.  I'm actually making up my grocery list at the moment.  I went to Kroger a few days ago just to get an idea of organic pricing and whatnot and bought the organic broccoli, avocados, spaghetti squash, butter, and roasted chicken.  What I could not find was the grassfed meats!  I looked around as best I could and read tons of labels, but it was no where to be found.  I'll have to ask an employee this time since I JUST GOT PAID SON! and will be able to actually purchase organic stuff.  :)

Just to preface a bit, I just graduated college in December and basically ate bread, sugar, bread, sugar, sugar, sugar, bread, sodium nitrate, and sugar.  I went on healthy kicks here and there- portion control (I failed the portioning AND control part), the low-calorie diet, the low-fat diet, the Master Cleanse, No Sweets diet (LOLZ), and briefly tried to go straight up raw-foodie.  I might as well have been climbing up a ladder and jumping off.  Each time I tried for something more structured or restrictive, I was climbing the ladder rungs.  And each time, the fall was harder and harder.  This is the yo-yo dieting you hear about.  And the yo-yo-ing part may not be entirely your fault, but instead the properties of food you're consuming.  It gives you energy and then you crash.  Or it doesn't give you energy and you're depressed.  These set-ups are designed to fail.  The diets with carbs and sugars or zero fats/proteins... they aren't good for your health and certainly won't give you the lasting results you want.  I feel so lucky to have finally come into the knowledge of what a body NEEDS to thrive and be healthy.   If you were trying to drive to a destination and you put 1/8 gasoline in your engine and 7/8 syrup, you would drive for a few miles and then have to stop and refill your "fuel" concoction.  We're filling our bodies with plenty of stuff, but it's not fuel.  It's not getting us anywhere.  I'm on a mission to give my body what it can actually use!  This blog is to keep me motivated and accountable for the fuel I'm giving my body.  I believe in this lifestyle and I know it won't be long before the results are evident.  I have a pretty white dress I have to fit into so.... here goes!
